OUR MOVIE REVIEW:

Caroline Lindy’s fantastical vision is a mesmerizing experience from beginning to end. The story tells of a woman finally in remission from her cancer, who must then face her monster of an ex-fiance and his destruction of her promised broadway dreams. All while having a childhood monster, simply known as “Monster”, as a roommate. There’s nothing quite like Your Monster - a romantic dramedy disguised as a horror.

Melissa Barrera and Tommy Dewey have indescribable chemistry on screen, a romantically thrilling relationship that will make you yearn for more time with the pair. Barrera is absolutely phenomenal with a sincere and truthful performance revolving around the monsters attributed to her life - both internal and external. She provides a wonderful voice to the final scene as her trial throughout finally lifts up and expels a beautiful solo piece on stage. Dewey is practically transformed into this beast that drips with infinite charm as they open themselves up to affection. Dewey’s performance fully immerses the audience into believing that maybe there can in fact be a love affair between a beauty and a literal monster with a heart of gold.

The film is infectious to watch as Laura gains a partnership and love for the monster living among her. As she lives her daily life without them, you can sense the anger creeping and the gloom of her day to day as she doubts herself. Her internal struggle of watching her ex-fiance continue forward like she never existed, is rightfully triggering and it’s easy to understand Monster’s frustration as she persists in allowing this man to undermine her at every turn.

Your Monster is fully capable of getting to your emotional core and will by chance have you awestruck in the way it concludes. Easily delivering one of the best performances of the year, Barrera continues to shine through. Dewey is not far behind with an outstanding performance, that without his exact take on Monster could have drastically changed everything the film has to offer. A brilliant film with an interpretive message behind every action and its final moments truly let the theme ascend to a whole other level. Your Monster is one of the best films of the season, the year and possibly the decade - do not pass up this mystical experience on the big screen.
