Right off the bat, the title of MAX’s new comedy was extremely off-putting. There is nothing wrong with showcasing the importance of college women openly exploring their sexuality, especially when all we’ve seen in media is the sex lives of men in college, but in my opinion there are far more nuanced titles. There are many issues I had with this pilot. I’ll stick to fleshing out the things that I think could have made it better, since there is some serious potential. 

 

The first half of the episode is wildly different from the second. Four college freshmen meet on moving day. They all come from very different backgrounds but find easy common ground. Pilots are always hard. There are so many people you need to introduce in a small amount of time, which can feel overwhelming, making modern pilots seem cringey. Every single character introduction involves terrible landing punchlines left and right in the first twenty minutes. Another big issue I have is that the actors are clearly thirty-something and are not written to be at all worried about their new transition into college, so they feel like grad-students. Maybe they go into it more as the show goes on, but I think those represented anxieties are missing from this. 

 

The switch up in the second half when the roommates start to get used to each other, then eventually band together against one of their shitty boyfriends. Then somehow, the skies opened up and things started to settle into a groove. The jokes and the general circumstances were suddenly more grounded and I was able to see the vision the writers are going for. By the last couple minutes, we are left on interesting notes and character developments that wrapped everything up nicer than I anticipated. Episodes are airing now on MAX!
