OUR MOVIE REVIEW:
Summer with the Guys isn’t as it seems at first glance, it’s not a college football comedy, in fact it's something much more scandalous and “magic”. Directed by Terrence Green, this low budget buddy comedy is like traveling back in time to the heyday of the early 00s - instances of the comedy may seem a bit outdated compared to today’s standard, but it also takes the audience back to a time when comedy could just be comedy without offending everyone.
For those that may have skimmed through and missed my nod to the Channing Tatum franchise, Magic Mike, it may come as a surprise that the film isn’t about football. It’s actually a mixture of seducing, stripping and drug dealing in order to pay for tuition once the group’s football scholarships become void. This twist on expectations really created a film I personally wasn’t anticipating and it made the humor all the more hilarious as these football players learn to groove to the music encompassing the night scene.
The group consisting of DC (Terrence Green), Jay (Brennan B Watts Watson), Dan (James Hal Hardy) and Bmore (Brashaad Mayweather) all have an undeniable connection to one another, easily generating chemistry through every interaction. The group’s dialogue made me remember the days of Entourage’s Vinny and the boys - the filmmaking felt personal, energetic and full of personality.
Where the film suffers is through some of the audio tearing and inconsistency in dialogue volume, especially within a single conversation. It doesn’t hurt the film to a level that the humor and character’s dynamic doesn’t operate to their full potential, but it’s certainly something that will be noticed upon first watch. Noting the audio, Summer with the Guys' musical choices are perfectly selected, each new beat is met with a wonderful connection with the scene. It all flowed well and made the film consistently entertaining to listen to between dialogue.
While there are some clear budgetary restrictions, the filmmakers never let it hold them back from creating the feature they wanted to make. Summer with the Guys may have some uneven story beats from time to time and certain characters have less of an impact by the end, but the comedy and chemistry is where the film always shines through. Summer with the Guys is an occasionally raunchy, regularly hilarious and wild escapade, as we witness the clock ticking down to the deadline to make tuition by summer’s end.
