OUR REFLECTION:

At first, Sister Death seems like a typical movie you often see on Spanish TV. However, as you watch, it turns into something else because it discusses a sensitive topic that isn't often talked about - the bad stuff from the war that people tried to hide. It's 2025 now, and looking back at this 2023 Netflix movie, it's more about that than just being scary. The convent is tied to Spain in the 1940s right after the Civil War. Sister Julia and the Mother Superior welcome her, excited to have the “holy girl” teaching, taking over from Sister Inés, who’s left. The kids seem to know something and the nuns act strange. And of course, Sister Narcisa keeps noticing it.

The movie started like a typical horror movie where chairs move around, strange noises come out of nowhere, and other creepy stuff happens. Since Sister Narcisa sees visions, she is capable of uncovering the reason behind this mystery and why it’s happening. One student, Rosa, tells Narcisa the place is haunted by “the girl”—if your name’s on the blackboard, you’re cursed. That’s why Inés ran off. When Rosa’s name shows up during a lesson, Sister Narcisa tries to figure it out with her, finishing that hangman drawing.

If you’re planning to watch this movie, it’s available on Netflix. But hopefully, it’ll be available on other platforms like DIRECTV, Hulu, and other streaming platforms in the near future.

A lot happened, but basically, the one haunting the convent is Sister Socorro’s spirit. The eclipse comes, blinds Narcisa, and shows her the war—soldiers attacking, and nuns suffering. That’s when Socorro’s spirit steps in. Through visions, Narcisa sees it: Socorro was raped during the war, had a daughter, and the nuns hid the kid. When the girl got sick, they tried to cool her fever in the bathroom, but she hit her head and died. Socorro found out, hanged herself in Narcisa’s room, and that’s who’s been behind it all.

Years later, Narcisa’s old, blind, teaching again, and the kids call her “Sister Death” when she meets Verónica. It’s like Socorro’s haunting left a mark on her too. The film is about that—how Socorro’s pain wouldn’t stay quiet, and Narcisa’s the one who had to face it. It’s a good movie to watch, though it would be better if it’s available on more streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Planet DISH, and more.

Overall, Sister Death is a slow-burn horror movie that's got a lot more going than you'd expect. It's not perfect. There are parts when it dragged a bit more than needed and the pacing might feel off at times but in its entirety, it's a good watch. It'll make you think a little, feel a little, and stick with you because of how it ties the creepy stuff to a real story. It’s a solid pick for your next movie night!
