OUR REVIEW:
In the pilot episode of Mrs. Davis we learn two important lessons:
1. Nuns take their fruit jams very seriously.
2. No one is safe from dismemberment and loss of limbs when there’s a convent of nuns in the vicinity.
The first episode of Mrs. Davis is a cocktail of comedy, gruesome yet campy violence, action, and intrigue.
We are introduced to a couple of mysterious characters - an island castaway with a loyal feline friend and a not-so-traditional horse-riding nun named Simone (Betty Gilpin) crusading to stop con-artist magicians.
Both are contacted by an ‘all knowing entity’ who can use anyone it likes as its proxy. While most refer to this entity lovingly as ‘Mrs. Davis’, others like Simone seem to hold a disdain and distrust for her, or as Simone refers to her, ‘’It’’.
Simone is reluctantly assigned a mission (nun pun intended) by Mrs. Davis to seek out and destroy a well known religious artifact. If she succeeds, "It" promises to honor her wishes by shutting itself down for good.
There are many unanswered questions in the pilot but the more questions arise, the more eager as an audience I was to learn more about these characters and this bizarre, yet eerily relatable world.
Mrs. Davis delivers with fun, creative action sequences swirled nicely with silly comedy beats.
The writing from co-creators Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers) and Tara Hernandez (The Big Bang Theory) grabs our attention with an unpredictable atmosphere encompassed with quirky characters. Mrs. Davis manages to be lighthearted and charming, while concurrently hinting at characters’ dark pasts they’re still reckoning with.
