SYNOPSIS
Investigating judge Iman grapples with paranoia amid political unrest in Tehran. When his gun vanishes, he suspects his wife and daughters, imposing draconian measures that strain family ties as societal rules crumble.
Since winning the Special Jury Prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig has gone on to be one the most critically acclaimed films of 2024 too.
Set in modern day Tehran, the film follows a man who has recently been hired as a judge in the country’s highest court. After the death of a young woman sparks a nationwide protest, mounting pressure from his job and his family begin to test his sanity.
Our very own Dempsey Pillot was fortunate enough to speak with Rasoulof. In the interview, the two discuss how the project came to be. In a surprising exchange, Rasoulof reveals that the idea of exploring oppression and its effects on a modern family actually came to him during his own unjust imprisonment.
You can listen to the full anecdote and much more in the interview below!
