OUR REVIEW:
Is it cake? No. Not for me.
Here’s the thing: you’ve seen one baking competition show, you’ve seen them all. It is a simple, trendy concept, but it can work well enough if you add your own flair. Unfortunately, Killer Cakes doesn’t push any boundaries to make itself stand out. In fact, I would say it holds itself back by licking off all the frosting as soon as possible and leaving its viewers with a sad loaf.
Four teams of two bakers work to create cakes that come alive to scare the judges. They get to work with the Scare Squad: horror special effects artists Tom Woodruff Jr. and Ashley Levy. Judges include Nikk Alcaraz, a food artist and actress Danielle Harris who you may remember as the little girl from Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers. I thought the show might have benefitted from a third judge in the lineup, as is most common in competition shows. I mean, it’s not like they’re really hiding the fact that this is a low budget reality competition show, but it just feels a bit hollow. And that’s despite what I thought would be this show’s ace in the hole: the iconic scream king Matthew Lillard.
That’s right. The all-powerful Shag Man himself hosts the show and brings some much needed charisma, but it’s sadly not enough to rescue the weak execution of a fairly unimaginative premise to begin with. I can’t say whether or not you’ll enjoy Killer Cakes. Plenty of folks like a nice fix of brain rot background noise trash TV. This one happens to be spooky themed, and sometimes that’s all you need! But for myself, when it comes to Killer Cakes, I’m not that sweet on it.
