OUR MOVIE REVIEW:
Dumb Money is pure entertainment, as equally comical as it is informative, this isn’t trying to be The Big Short - it’s just attempting to offer a take on a singular absurd stock market incident of the early 2020s. The script is snappy and well-paced to always offer an adrenaline boost any time the idea of buying / selling stocks becomes dull. Similar to what director Craig Gillespie did with I,Tonya - he was able to create a brilliant biopic that didn’t shed too bright a light on the horrific aspects of the story.
Loaded with an absolutely phenomenal cast consisting of the likes of Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Shailene Woodley, Anthony Ramos, Nick Offerman, America Ferrera, Vincent D’Onofrio, Pete Davidson and many others. Surprisingly every single performance is subdued and realistic to what I would imagine the actual people were like during the phenomena, that is besides Paul Dano’s Keith Gill is electric in the lead role, showcasing the power he had by connecting with his fanbase and getting a little stock he “liked” to become a path to millions for many.
While the film pinpoints a select few real people that managed to beat the system and make their dreams come true, that isn’t the case for all included. This sad fact is due to wrongful doing from the large hedge funds and companies like Robinhood who caused havoc once they knew they were in serious trouble. Dumb Money chronicles the rise and fall of the stock and the legal actions taken by those involved. It’s a film that centers around the feel good aspect of the story and supplies a significant level of disgust for those who attempted to collapse what the “little guy” managed to start. It’s a well rounded film held together with its captivating script, realistic portrayals and magnetic direction.
