OUR MOVIE REVIEW:
This is Top Gun: Maverick for the strange and unusual.
MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD:
I don’t know how they did it, but somehow I also do. I should have had faith in Father Burton. Being fully engulfed into the weird world of Beetlejuice once again is nothing short of magical. I'm kicking myself for ever doubting that a follow up to one of my all time favorites could break the mold of shoddy legacy sequels. I can see where some viewers would have issues with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but I fully embraced it's insanity just as much as the 1988 original. I mean, what else could you expect?
The hairs on my arms were at 90 degrees as Danny Elfman's score ripped through the skies of Winter River, CT. Lydia Deetz is now a professional medium and host of a ghost hunting show, being famous for living in THE ghost house of Winter River. Lydia, still haunted by Betelgeuse, finds her world turned upside down when her father Charles passes away and her rebellious teenage daughter stumbles on a mysterious portal to the afterlife. She must do the unfathomable and call for the help of the most annoying person she has ever met to help her before it's too late.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has a lot going on, and pulls it all off better than it has any right to. Sure, there are some hollow nods to the past and weird plot holes, but it wasn’t enough to snap me out of the spell. I think they really did the source material justice 36 years later in the best possible way, without being a full fan service reboot. Better than some of the franchise sequels we've seen lately. It does its own thing proudly, and I feel like in this day and age that's all we can really hope for. The cast is just as enchanting as it was in '88. Visiting this world was truly like seeing a loved one you never thought you’d see again, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hugged me like a warm blanket on a chilly Midwest September day.
Don’t think about it too hard. Just go have fun. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is in theaters NOW!
