OUR REVIEW:
Every good series has to have a gripping premiere, something that’ll make the audience latch onto the premise and continue forward with a set expectation. Apple Cider Vinegar creates an immersive depiction of a true life monster that was manipulative, narcissistic and mentally unstable.
Rapidly rising star Kaitlyn Dever flawlessly depicts Belle Gibson (as well as her Australian accent) and almost instantly makes you despise her presence on screen. The premiere is merely a set up for his diabolical actions that take place after, her exploration of the actually sick that are suffering from a disease she is claiming to be cured of. The first episode showcases a few stages of her fame, from her rise to her peak and to her ultimate downfall, resulting in her taking a case with a Crisis PR firm.
Initially none of the characters are likable, even the ones hedging their bets against Gibson are all incredibly unlikable. This causes the audience to despise our lead, but not entirely root for her opposers. That’s a huge issue that may rely on the reality of the situation - when the critics PR professional is the most enjoyable presence on screen at any given point — what’s the motivation to continue?
The answer is simple, to watch someone who tricked thousands of people into thinking they had nonsensical hope without taking the proper medical procedures spiral. That’s the wish at least, going into the series absolutely blind as I managed to accomplish — it seems like a much warranted end to the story that she would be charged with something — it’s just the matter of how we get there.
