SYNOPSIS:

A Los Angeles escort is accused of a murder which he did not commit.

A Feast For The Senses

For the first time ever, Richard Gere’s career defining role in American Gigolo makes its way to 4K UHD! Visually the film stuns but the choice to upgrade may be swayed by the version you currently possess. If you have the Arrow Blu-ray release then you might want to stay where you are to avoid noticeable film grain, while those with the Paramount released Blu-ray may want to take the leap.

Where the 4K UHD offers a superior experience is through its audio. Sounding sharper and amplifying the crucial pieces of audio that in older releases may have been more difficult to hear.

Paul Schrader may not make the most crowd friendly pieces of cinema but with each release it’s clear the filmmaker is going at the best of his own drum. Currently sitting at a 73% RT Score, the consensus is as follows, “While Paul Schrader's clinical direction and Richard Gere's muted performance don't stir much passion, American Gigolo succeeds as a stylish character study.”

For fans of the film, they will be delighted to know they are being treated to a splendid assortment of bonus features, some returning and others newly added. Some of the newly added include a commentary with film critic Adrian Martin, as well as an interview with Paul Schrader about the project. Not to mention the always incredible exterior bonuses such as a reversible cover, a double-sided poster, a collector’s booklet and six postcard reproduction artcards.

This is certainly one to pick up if a deal arises for newcomers, but also depending on circumstances could be a worthy upgrade for those who already have American Gigolo in their collection.
